# SMS & MMS setup

> Prepare one number configuration for text and media, understand costs and save your workspace preferences.

SMS and MMS share one configuration in **Channels → SMS & MMS**. SMS carries text. MMS adds media where supported. A phone number alone does not establish provider access, ownership verification or destination coverage.

> [!NOTE]
>
> This screen saves planning preferences. Live SMS/MMS sending, number allocation, porting and inbound routing are not activated by saving. No number is purchased and no charge is incurred.

## Choose a number

Select **Use my number** and enter the international number, or select **Get a Smerio number** and specify the country where you need it. The latter records interest. There is no selectable number inventory or reservation yet. Existing numbers require a review of ownership, provider connectivity and capabilities before activation.

## Messaging preferences

Choose SMS only or SMS & MMS, destination countries, use case, estimated monthly volume and whether you need replies in Inbox. Two-way messaging and MMS depend on provider and number support. The reply choice records a preference. It does not configure routing today.

See [SMS segments](https://smerio.com/docs/channels/sms.md) and [MMS media requirements](https://smerio.com/docs/channels/mms.md) before preparing messages. Consent and applicable sending requirements still need to be met before live use.

## Save and return

Workspace admins can use **Save preferences**. Members can read the saved configuration. Preferences persist in the workspace and load when you return. Saving does not submit anything to a provider.

If another administrator saved first, the page reports a conflict. Review your unsaved values, then use **Reload saved preferences** before editing again. Reloading discards unsaved changes after confirmation. Changes are saved explicitly. Leaving before saving discards them.

## Costs

The panel separates the platform subscription from usage. Number setup and recurring charges, SMS segments, MMS usage, inbound messaging, carrier fees and taxes require confirmation for the chosen service and destinations. No confirmed rate card or price estimate is available in this screen yet.

Long SMS content can use multiple billable segments. MMS has separate pricing and media constraints. Confirm coverage and all rates before activation.

## Screen reference

The local test environment below uses synthetic data. The screenshots were refreshed on 22 September 2026 with the shared Hub header. They show saved configuration preferences, not an activated number.

## An already connected SMS sender

The setup page displays **SMS connected** when your workspace has an active SMS connection. Its saved number preferences remain separate from that connection. An alphanumeric sender supports outbound text, while incoming replies require an activated receiving number. MMS requires its own supported route and is not implied by SMS activation.

## Requested sender and the number on a phone

**Sending identity** shows the connected Smerio sender ID, the requested originating identity and the API hosting region. The hosting region is not the recipient country. A trial route or operator may replace a requested name with a test originator. The panel does not claim that the requested value is the final number displayed on a handset.

SMS cannot carry an RCS logo or verified business profile. Depending on the destination, an approved phone number or alphanumeric name may be available. Incoming replies need a supported receiving number. Saving preferences does not purchase one or change the active originator.
